In order to provide better service to Fisherman, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture over number of years have installed service pillars around the Maltese island. These pillars supply fishermen with water and electricity for their use on their fishing vessels. Currently there are over seventy (70) pillars installed where the majority are in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk with over fifty (50) pillars. Other localities include St Paul’s Bay, Marsaskala, Birzebbuga, St Julian’s, Kalkara, Marsamxett, Zurrieq, Msida, Mellieha and Marsa.
For whom uses these pillars, it’s a must that they will be in possession of Transponder (chip). These can be obtained either from the Hard Standing Facility, situated in Marsaxlokk or from the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture situated at Ghammieri. The transponder would be topped up via credit for the amount they require, and hence utilise the credit from these service pillars. Payments for these transponders should always be by credit/debit card or by cheque.
In case there are problems concerning faulty pillars, one should report on this number 21654015 available 24/7.
